I thought I knew the man I’d been dating for a year and a half. But when he finally introduced me to his teenage son, dinner felt strange from the moment I sat down at the table. Then I heard them whispering in French, unaware that I understood every word, and I realized he’d been hiding something from me
Have you ever met someone who felt like they were at home?
That was Daniel. Or at least, that was the Daniel I thought I knew.
We met in a coffee shop one rainy day. I was hovering near the coffee shop counter when he accidentally bumped me on the elbow. My latte splashed all over the floor.
“I’m so sorry! Let me ask you for another one,” he told me.
Just her voice gave me goosebumps. I was hooked even before I turned around.
Have you ever met someone who felt like they were at home?
He was 34 and I was 28, and that six-year age difference seemed like a promise of stability that I didn’t know I was looking for.
Those first dates were the best of my life. He was affectionate, attentive, and always knew exactly how to cheer me up when I was having a bad day.
Of course, every relationship has its downsides.
One night, at the beginning of our dating life, I finally mustered up the courage to ask her about her past.
I knew he had been married, but he never talked about it.
Every relationship has its downsides.
“You were married, weren’t you?” I asked him.
Her smile faded a little. It was like a cloud passing over the sun.
“Yes. My wife died in a car accident.”
I felt a sharp pang of guilt for having brought it up. “Oh, Daniel. I’m so sorry.”
She shook her head and looked away. “It was years ago. I don’t like to talk about it.”
I looked him in the eyes and believed every word he said.
I felt a sharp pang of guilt for having brought up the subject.
Why wouldn’t he? He was the man who planned our weekends two weeks in advance. He was the man who always checked that I got home safe and sound.
He had been honest about everything else, so I had no reason to suspect that he was hiding anything from me.
Sometimes her name (Stephanie) would come up when we attended barbecues with her friends, but Daniel would change the subject.
I asked my friends and family not to mention it because I thought it was too painful for him.
I had no reason to suspect that he was hiding something from me.
Then there was Leo, Daniel’s son, from his marriage to Stephanie.
“My son is fourteen years old,” Daniel told me one night while we were preparing dinner at my house. “He’s been through a lot.”
“Do you think I’ll meet him soon?” I asked. I was nervous but excited.
Daniel leaned back on the counter and sighed. “In time. I just need to be sure first.”
I tilted my head. “Are you sure about what?”
Then there was Leo, Daniel’s son, from his marriage to Stephanie.
“That this is real,” he said, holding out his hand. “That Leo is ready. I have to be sure for all of us. You understand, right?”
“Of course,” I squeezed his hand. “You want to protect him. I just… I hope you know I’m in this for the long haul. I love you, Daniel, and we’re serious. That’s why I want to meet Leo.”
“I know.”
He smiled tenderly and leaned forward to kiss my forehead
“That’s why I want to meet Leo.”
It made sense, right? He didn’t want to bring a woman into his son’s life unless he was serious. That’s what it seemed like to me, but I was wrong.
Finally, the invitation arrived. After 18 months of dating, she was going to have dinner at Daniel’s house.
I spent an hour deciding what to wear. Should I go casual? Sophisticated?
“Just be yourself,” Daniel told me over the phone. “Leo is shy. Don’t worry too much.”
I decided on a nice sweater and jeans.
I was wrong.
When I arrived at the house, a heavy silence hung in the air. It was too quiet for a house with a teenager
I entered the dining room and Leo was already seated at the table. He was tall for his age, with stiff shoulders. He glanced up at me, his eyes widening, and then he didn’t even look in my direction for the rest of the evening.
“Leo,” Daniel said happily, “this is…”.
“I know,” Leo interrupted. “Hi,” he didn’t smile.
“Nice to meet you, Leo.” I sat down across from him, trying to keep my energy up.
He didn’t even look in my direction for the rest of the evening.
She just nodded and looked back at her plate.
The dinner was, in a word, painful. Every question I asked seemed to hit a wall.
“How’s school going?” I asked.
“Good,” Leo replied.
“What are you up to? Any hobbies?”
“The usual,” he said.
Daniel tried to fill the gaps by talking too much and laughing at things that weren’t funny.
Every question I asked seemed to hit a wall.
He was trying so hard that it made me uncomfortable.
At one point, I saw them exchange a glance. It was quick and sharp. It seemed to me that they were communicating in a language I didn’t speak.
My chest started to tighten. Was I the problem? Was there something wrong with my face?
The silence grew thick, like a physical weight in the room.
I couldn’t stand it anymore. I got up with a forced smile.
He was trying so hard that it made me uncomfortable.
“I’ll take these plates to the kitchen,” I said.
Daniel jumped slightly. “You don’t have to do that.”
“I want to do it,” I insisted. I needed to breathe.
I went into the kitchen and stood by the sink.
This was turning into a disaster! Part of me wanted to cry. I had waited so long for this day, and although I hadn’t expected Leo to take to me instantly, I hadn’t once imagined he would be so cold.
I was turning back when I heard Leo whisper.
Part of me wanted to cry.
They were speaking in French. It was clear that Leo wanted to make sure that, even if he heard them, he wouldn’t understand what they were saying, but he was wrong.
My high school French teacher was a legend. She was strict, relentless, and made sure we learned all the tenses and nuances of the language.
“Dad, didn’t you tell him the truth?”
I froze.
They were speaking in French.
Leo’s voice trembled. It wasn’t anger. It was something heavier… like shame
There was a long pause before Daniel answered.
“Leo, please don’t interfere in our affairs,” Daniel said. His voice was cold.
But Leo didn’t back down. “But you’re lying to her. She deserves to know what’s going on. She’s a very good woman. Let her go or tell her that you…”
Her voice lowered even more.
I only made out the name of one residence.
“He deserves to know what’s going on.”
Daniel exploded.
“I told you not to bring that up!” he hissed in French. “If you can’t behave tonight, maybe you should go to your room.”
“You’re being unfair! You can’t punish me for wanting to tell the truth. What are you doing, Dad? She even looks like Mom.”
At that moment, I knew I couldn’t stay in that house for another second. I forced myself to move and went back to the dining room with a mask of forced calm. I took my jacket from the chair.
I couldn’t stay in that house for even a moment longer.
“I don’t feel well,” I said. “I think I should go.”
Daniel stood up. “What? Is it about the food? Stay here, let me get you some water.”
“No,” I said, a little sharply. “I just need to be home.”
I walked out the door and got into my car before the tears even had a chance to start.
But I didn’t drive home.
I Googled the name of the residence I’d heard Leo mention. It was a few kilometers from the city.
My instinct was screaming at me to go there, so that’s what I did.
I Googled the name of the residence I had heard about.
Forty-five minutes later, I was at reception, feeling like an intruder
“Can I help you?” a woman asked me.
“I’ve come to see…”, I hesitated.
“Stephanie? What are you doing here?”
Someone’s hands rested on my shoulders. I turned around and found myself face to face with a woman in her forties who looked worried.
“I came to see…”
“Oh,” she sighed in relief. “I’m so sorry, I thought you were my sister.”
“Stephanie? Daniel’s wife?”
He frowned. “Why do you ask? Who are you?”
“I’m… Daniel told me you died in an accident. I’ve been seeing him.”
Her eyebrows rose. “Is Daniel seeing someone? I can’t believe it! He doesn’t want to divorce my sister, but he’s dating…” She looked me up and down, “…a woman who looks just like her.”
“Is Daniel dating someone? I can’t believe it!”
I felt like I’d just fallen through the ice of a frozen lake. “Are you telling me Stephanie’s alive and Daniel’s still married to her?”
“She’ll never fully recover from the injuries she sustained in the accident. She needs constant care, but yes, she’s alive and still married to Daniel,” she said, crossing her arms. “He never visits her, but according to him, a divorce would be too complicated and difficult and would disrupt the stability he maintains for Leo.”
I felt like I was going to vomit.
“She is alive and still married to Daniel.”
“But if you ask me, he’s just being selfish and lazy,” she leaned toward me. “I can’t tell you what to do, but I strongly advise you to stay away from him before it’s too late.”
Then I went straight home.
I was sitting on the porch steps, still reeling from the discovery, when Daniel’s car pulled into my house.
“There you are! I was so worried,” he said, coming closer to me. “Leo’s just a moody teenager, I swear…”
“No, I think Leo was being cold because you caught him in a lie he didn’t want to be a part of. I know the truth about Stephanie,” I said. “I speak French. And I went to the residence. I met her sister.”
Daniel’s car entered my house.
It stopped halfway. The mask not only slipped off, but shattered into pieces.
“I just wanted to get back to a normal life. She’s not my wife anymore, in any sense.”
“So why didn’t you ask for a divorce?”
“I… It’s complicated, but that doesn’t change anything. I love you…”
“No, you don’t.”
I stood up and faced him. “You’ve lied to me for eighteen months, Daniel.”
“So why didn’t you ask for a divorce?”
“I’m still the same man you spent the last year with,” he insisted.
“No,” I said, backing away toward my door. “I don’t even know who that man is. Please go. And Daniel? Don’t ever come back.”
I went in and closed the door.
It was over.
Daniel hadn’t been a widower. He’d been a husband who chose the easy way out over the honest way out
My heart was broken and I didn’t know if I would ever fully recover from Daniel’s betrayal, but at least I was no longer living his lie.
“Never come back.”
